An interesting article on the comparison of Atlas-ti and Nudist packages can be found on the Sociological research online site. This is a subscription based journal but articles up to 1999 are free.

I have found this free to download qualitative analysis programme which may be of use –  if I ever get to that stage. I am suffering from research fatigue at present  – too much reading and not enough practice

I have also added the link to the methods page.

Research Phrase Translation
It has long been known… I didn’t look up the original reference.
A definite trend is evident… These data are are practically meaningless.
Of great theoretical and practical importance… Interesting to me.
While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to these questions… An unsuccessful experiment, but I still hope to get it published.
Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study… The results of the others didn’t make any sense.
Typical results are shown… The best results are shown.
These results will be shown in a subsequent report… I might get around to this sometime if I’m pushed.
The most reliable results are those obtained by Jones… He was my graduate assistant.
It is believed that… I think.
It is generally believed that… A couple of other people think so too.
It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding of the phenomenon occurs… I don’t understand it.
Correct within an order of magnitude… Wrong.
It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field… This is a lousy paper, but so are all the others on this miserable topic.
Thanks are due to Joe Blotz for assistance with the experiment and to George Frink for valuable discussions… Blotz did the work and Frink explained to me what it meant.
A careful analysis of obtainable data… Three pages of notes were obliterated when I knocked over a glass of beer.

I seem to be searching for a perfect glossary which will explain all the words I do not understand. Haven’t found it yet but I am adding some glossaries that are specific to the research methods used. Maybe this is a near as it gets.

Ethical approval January 23, 2006

Obtaining ethical approval is a stage in research that can no longer be avoided.  knowing where to start is useful but basically it depends upon where the research is to take place. If it is anything to do with people then the NHS research committees might be involved which is a two stage process. Other research will at least  involve a commttee at the host institution.  I have included some links to the NHS research governance guidance and a useful flowchart to map the process.

I have added quite a few pages today in my hope to begin and continue to be organised. If nothing else a research project certainly identifies this problem very quickly as the whole project becomes chaotic. This site provides plenty of space to store links and files so I am getting more and more excited about the prospect of carrying around a research project  -virtually. You can password protect pages and /or posts so that only you can access them – very useful!

A place to store and discuss research issues.  A collection of resources would be pretty useful  – wish I could find one without wasting precious research time. Maybe this will be it -

Aims of reactive  -

What is the difference between all the different methods?

Why are there so many?

What do all the words mean?

How do you spell / pronounce them?

Will I ever understand analysis without it sending a cold shiver down my back?

How many words?
