SPSS means Statistical Package for the Social Sciences but has grown considerably as an analysis tool since its inception in 1968. I went to a lecture on this analysis package last week and was quite impressed because I understood it and it actually appeared to be quite a useful way of handling data! The website is a useful resource even if you do not use the package – you have to register but you will be able to access reports and guidance on things like designing a survey.

Obtaining ethical approval is a stage in research that can no longer be avoided.  knowing where to start is useful but basically it depends upon where the research is to take place. If it is anything to do with people then the NHS research committees might be involved which is a two stage process. Other research will at least  involve a commttee at the host institution.  I have included some links to the NHS research governance guidance and a useful flowchart to map the process.
