At last some humour! I have found a great site to keep students going when they are flagging and intend to send it on to all my colleagues too! This website is basically a comic book of strips delivered approximately twice a week to keep up the spirits of PhD students and it works, try this one http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=462

The UKGrad Website provides useful advice for research students and supervisors on planning and carrying out docotoral research. For the first time I have seen a list of competencies that should be achieved upon completing a doctoral programme and they can be found on this site under the heading of

SPSS means Statistical Package for the Social Sciences but has grown considerably as an analysis tool since its inception in 1968. I went to a lecture on this analysis package last week and was quite impressed because I understood it and it actually appeared to be quite a useful way of handling data! The website is a useful resource even if you do not use the package – you have to register but you will be able to access reports and guidance on things like designing a survey.

This link was provided by David Fetterman in his book Ethnography step by step 2nd Ed. (1998 London. Sage). A useful introduction to ethography. A difficult to place method /methodology as it seems to fit within most theories especially of the qualitative type. Perhaps best thought of as a method within a method as it does not really stand up as a theoretical methodology on its own.
